Portugal Golden Visa (ARI)

The Portugal Golden Visa (ARI) program offers foreign investors residency rights within the European Union (EU). Starting in 2025, real estate investment options have been excluded, and a variety of alternative investment routes have been introduced. This program encourages meaningful economic contributions to Portugal and provides investors with the opportunity to obtain residency and, ultimately, citizenship.

Key Investment Options

1. Investment Funds (minimum €500,000)
  • Invest in venture capital or private equity funds with at least 60% invested in companies headquartered in Portugal.

  • Funds must have a minimum maturity of 5 years and exclude real estate-related activities.

  • Average annual returns range from 3% to 10%, offering portfolio diversification benefits.

2. Business Creation and Job Creation
  • Establish a new business in Portugal and create at least 10 full-time jobs.

  • In low-density regions (NUTS III population density below 100 people/km²), the requirement is reduced to 8 jobs.

3. Investment in Existing Companies
  • Invest at least €500,000 in an existing Portuguese company and create or maintain at least 5 full-time jobs.

  • Employment must be maintained for at least 3 years after the investment.

4. Cultural Heritage Contribution (minimum €250,000)
  • Donation towards the restoration of national cultural heritage or support of arts projects.

  • Reduced minimum of €200,000 in low-density regions.

5. Investment in Scientific and Technological Research (minimum €500,000)
  • Investment in public or private research institutions.

  • Reduced minimum of €400,000 in low-density regions.

Application Process Summary

  • 1. Choose an investment option and prepare the required funds.
  • 2. Open a Portuguese local bank account for investment and fund transfers.
  • 3. Execute the investment and submit the required documentation.
  • 4. After document review, receive Golden Visa approval and obtain residency rights.
  • 5. Apply for citizenship after fulfilling residency requirements for 5 years.

Important Notes

  • Real estate investments have been excluded from eligibility since 2025.
  • Investment funds must be transferred in Euros through a Portuguese local bank.
  • Funds must be maintained for at least 5 years; early withdrawal may affect visa eligibility.
  • Applicants must meet Portuguese language proficiency or minimum residency requirements to apply for citizenship.

Eligibility Criteria

  • 1. Age and Health

    Applicants must be at least 18 years old and in good health.

  • 2. Legal Record

    Applicants must have no criminal record in Portugal; applications may be rejected if records exist.

  • 3. Investment Amount

    Must meet the minimum investment amount and provide legal proof of fund origin.
